Recall election date is set

Just 3 days before Christmas is when Elyria voters are being asked to head to the polls to answer the recall election question: Should Elyria Mayor Bill Grace be recalled. City Council selected the date on Wednesday. The election is the result of a petition drive by the political action committee called "Stand Up Elyria." The group charges the mayor with mishandling city finances. The cost of the election is estimated at about $50 thousand.
Ross Found Guilty

Former Lorain County Commissioner Michael Ross has been found guilty of 19 charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, money laundering, bribery and filing incomplete, fraudulent or false tax returns. Ross will held at the Lorain County Jail until his sentencing on December 11th.
Tie One On For Safety

Public safety leaders and local law enforcement agencies are teaming up with MADD to launch the 23rd annual "Tie One on for Safety" campaign. They are reminding people to avoid driving while intoxicated and also to buckle up because that is the best defense against drunk drivers. This campaign is also encouraging people to tie a red ribbon on their car as a pledge to drive sober.
Bill would enlist Ohio schools in obesity fight

Ohio schools would become a key battleground in the fight against childhood obesity, under legislation introduced in both the state House and Senate. A bipartisan bill offered Tuesday would require schools to provide students with 30 minutes a day of moderate to rigorous physical activity, apart from recess.
Urban League and partner to offer small biz loans

The National Urban League and a lending company are offering loans to small businesses unable to get approved by banks. On Deck Capital will provide loans through local Urban League offices. Officials say the program will start in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, then expand across the country.
Turnpike offers buyouts to toll-collectors

The Ohio Turnpike is offering toll collectors buyouts of up to $35,000 because the E-ZPass electronic payment system means fewer booth attendants are needed. Executive Director George Distel outlined the buyout offer to turnpike commission members on Monday.
EPD to absorb brunt of cuts

Calling it regretable but necessary, Elyria Mayor Bill Grace announced the reduction of the Elyria Police Department by 10 police officers, including it's chief Mike Medders, who will retire. In all, the police cuts will save the city over $2 million, with an additional $2.25 million in cuts in other departments. The city's fire and parks and rec departments were spared this time around.
Born Farm Fire

A fire broke out on the Born Farm in Henrietta Township. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No one was hurt. Damage estimates of $200 thousand dollars don't include inventory inside the maintenance workshop. A number of explosions sent large plumes of smoke high into the air and could be seen from miles away.
